greentext, post-irony, and agency in the age of “agents”

Published by the Institute of Network Cultures Longforms, this essay examines greentext — a markup-heavy literary form that appeared on 4chan but never on Japanese imageboards running identical code — as a case of human agency asserting itself against Kittlerian media determinism, and argues that the form may represent one of the first truly AI-proof forms of writing. Because greentext never verifies that anyone is behind it, there’s nothing to counterfeit — which means the authorship anxieties that now shadow everything else online simply don’t apply.
